What is a Street Tree Anyways?
A street tree is any tree planted between the sidewalk and the street.
This area is called the city's "right-of-way" and is technically city property.
But the cool thing is that since the right-of-way is city property, it also doubles as public space that, when used correctly, benefits us all.
When the Corning Street Tree Project plants a tree in the right-of-way, we will work directly with the city to apply for a permit. This is super important because a) there are things like gas and water lines under the sidewalk that we need to steer clear of and b) because there is a specific list of trees that we need to choose from.
We will always plant the types of trees that, when mature, don't interfere with the power lines.
When a humble street tree is part of a diverse and well-maintained "urban forest" (that's our goal here at the CSTP) it becomes a beautiful and really important canopy over our city streets.
We'll talk a LOT more about why this tree canopy is so important, so come back soon!
